Unity Tutorial 04

Challenge 2 - Play Fetch Lesson 2.4  In this weeks lesson, we focused mainly on implementing a way to collide game objects and also how to trigger events such a deleting an object once it collides. We worked on a new system to allow the animals to spawn on a timed interval to give more time for the player, and we also gave the player a new "Game Over" message whenever an animal get past them. Looking at the new C# skills I learn this week, I learned how to make custom methods and functions including how to use InvokeRepeating() to allow me to repeat code or loop it. Log debug was interesting to mess around with and I wonder what uses it could have in the future. Challenge 2 When it came to completing this weeks challenge project I only found difficultly near the end where we were told to do bonus objectives. Before doing the bonus objectives we needed to fix the location of the dog, the placement of balls and also the timing of balls/dogs being brought onto the screen. In the

Ready for battle, Unit 2 Lesson 2.1 When it comes to functionality I made it so the user can move left to right using their arrow keys but also made a range in which the player can't leave . Probably the most important skill I learned during this lesson was the new C# code called If-statement which basically implies if something happens or if something occurs then run this section of code. It's pretty useful and I've messed around with it before on python before. We also learnt how to just object scales and greater/less than operators. Lesson 2.2 Next, I learnt how to set up the prefabs and the process of setting up files for it, I learnt about how important it is to override prefabs so they are all synced up with the game, I tested my keypresses while also making sure to set up an out of bounds C# script which removed the pizza and animals from the scene once they go past a certain x or -x value. I set up the projectile for the pizza to be launched whenever we press the

Game Idea Research

Image
Nightmare Creature   Last weekend we were asked to begin our research on game ideas, possible games we could code within unity and showcase to our class. We were asked to come up with 4 unique ideas, here is mine: 1. Horror Puzzle Game 2. 3D Sphere Game 3. Tower Defence Game 4. FPS Shooter Game Horror Puzzle Game This week we were asked to pick one of the four ideas that we would focus on for the rest of the semester, I decided to go with my first the idea and possibly my favourite, a Horror Puzzle Game. My love for horror games is massive and I hope I can translate that love into making a good functioning horror game myself that I’m proud of, I have tones of knowledge on the subject of horror games like what mechanic and game functions should be in place, and how lighting/game design should look. This game idea interests me the most and I think ill be able to focus in on it for the rest of the semester with ease thanks to the crazy amount of unity tutorials about horror game

Unity Tutorial 02

Tutorial 1.4 Learned plenty of new skills that focus on giving the player more control over the game such as the input manager and allowing the player to input up to make the vehicle go forward and down to make the vehicle go backwards. We learned how to rotate the vehicle while maintaining a forward motion/stance. We made the scripts a little less messy and gave them more comments, learned about empty game objects and how to nest game objects within them such as the obstacles. I'm really proud I finished my first ever unity tutorial with such ease, I'm excited to get into more. Challenge 1  This was a lot of fun to do and I tried my best to not look at the hints further down the page. All in all, I was quite pleased with my knowledge on how far I got the only issue I did get confused by was actually getting the planes speed under control but I soon realised my mistake. Coding the propeller was fun too I didn't think I would get it the first time but I did. I think somethi

Game Elements

Image
The first article I read was called “What are the Qualities of Games” which is kind of like the previous articles I’ve read in the past week. The article touches on aspects of a game such as how players interact with the game or what the goal is for the players in the game. The most intriguing part of the article for me personally was Critical analysis part, it focuses on finding the core of the game elements, finding out why the dev decides to do certain things within the game and for what reasons. More info on this article can be found here . The second article called “Game Design Research” talks about the difference in views when discussing game design and how it can differ depending on the game designer. It mentions how getting feedback from players and other dev can be vital for how well the game will turn out and how beta’s have been used over the past few years to help games gain a perspective on how their game runs/how interested players are in their concept. Sadly, though ov

Feedback Thoughts

Image
Constructive feedback. Article 1 - “Why it’s so hard to hear negative feedback” It's understandable why people don’t like here negative feedback as most people would rather hear how great their work or how amazing of a job, they are doing. The difference is negative feedback doesn’t always have to be a bad thing it can be used to help improve one’s work, Constructive feedback is better than normal feedback because it's used in a way to tell a person how to become better not just that they are doing good but that they can accomplish even better things by changing or adapting to new ways. Tim Herrera talks a lot about this and gives a great statement on people participating in good faith, basically meaning everyone is trying to help everyone grow as a person or colleague. More information about this article can be found here.   Article 2 - “Rewire your critical brain” This article focuses over the concept that while growing up society and the world has time after time t

Game Brainstorm Part 1

Horror puzzle game Horror is my all-time favourite genre in life, I love horror whether it be in music, movies or even in games it’s amazing. Now recently I’ve been finding myself playing a lot of puzzle games that normally revolve around the main player solving them to either save himself or someone else. I thought about this idea for a while and thought about how good it would be if I did a mix between the two bringing a puzzle game into a horror environment. The game the location could really be placed anywhere and could even have multiple maps depending on how long and complex I make the level design, I could make the game location in a forest, high school, hospital, or even an abandoned cabin, the main issue though with this game the concept is the making of a convincing the environment which would give off the horror vibes, I would be able to access plenty of assists which are horror-related online which is fine but still having to spend hours on the level the design might not

Unity Tutorial 01

I have just completed my first Unity tutorial! It was a lot of fun and I was very excited to jump in and get started, I actually found the work quite easy and not hard to follow at all, I even put the videos at 1.5x - 2x's the speed as I felt some of the stuff being shown was common sense. I've messed around with C# Coding before so that really came in handy when it came to the coding section. Lesson 1.1 In the first lesson, we mainly learn about the editor and its functions while also some basic skills within the scene/game view. I learned how to make a project, importing assets, moving and rotating my view, customizing my layout, and much more. The main new functions I learn were positioning assets within the editor such as resetting the position of the car to (0, 0, 0) or positioning the camera behind the car. Screenshot of Scene/Game View Lesson 1.2 Lesson 1.2 focused on making the car functional or at least giving it basic features such as driving forward and making it col

Game Design

What is a Game, Anyway? I've personally always wondered what actually makes the fundamentals of a game or the basic features to which something can be called "A Game", and not until I read an article called "What is a game any way?" did I truly understand. The article itself is quite interesting and while it did take me a while to finish, it did teach me quite a few things such as the fact that everyone has a different point of view on what a game really is, what classifies as a game, some people think of video games or board games first but the list is endless really.  While reading this article you can begin to understand that a lot of games have similar ideas that contrast each other or relate in either one or two ways. The most eye-opening point made in this article to myself was one made by Schreiber who talks about the relationship between "Play" and "Games" where technology is not even needed to help enjoy a game of fetch or "play

Technology and Class Tools

Image used - Unity Learn After looking through the tools and technology we plan to use throughout the course, I can without a doubt say I am excited and eager to get stuck right in. I can not wait to begin programming or at least attempting to program a functioning game and design ideas with the aid of various websites and lecture work.  I've never looked into using bookmarking but it seems like a basic and easy to use opinion to keep your items organized. improving on my writing/typing skills will definitely come into play over this coming year with the number of blogs we have to post but all in all, it should be fun and new to me. I'm also excited to get stuck into unity, I've messed around with it before but never to the scale of doing tutorials or following along with the process of game development.

An introduction to... me?

Hi, my name is Gavin Dwyer, I'm a wannabe film/music director who has a passion for photography and web development. I currently live in Co. Meath with my family as I attend college in TU Dublin Blanchardstown. My hobbies include Scouts, rugby, golf, and photography. In my spare time, I tend to find myself watching movies/tv-shows or playing video games. I'm excited to start my 2nd year of college especially with everything going on in the world over the summer like Covid-19 and wildfires it been stressful but now that college is back I can continue with my drive for media studies and college as a whole. Over the break, I've spent most of my time playing games such as Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, Battlefront 2, Garry's Mod, and Among Us. TF2 and GMOD are by far my favourite games as I have over 5000+ hrs in both games. Both games released back in 2007 and still currently have over a few thousand active players. If I'm not playing a video game I most likely am watchin
